Course Description
Course Overview
Over six weeks, the members will read The Iliad in translation.
-
The course will begin with several myths (which will be supplied by Ruth) that underlie The Iliad itself, which begins in the ninth year between the Greeks and the Trojans, using the paperback prose by H. D. Rouse.
-
Any poetic translation is welcome as well, but Ruth will be using the one by Fagles.
-
The Greek myths will come from Robert Graves’ two-volume paperback collection from which Ruth will excerpt many for the start of the course.
-
In addition, we’ll bring in the work of Jonathan Shay, especially his book Achilles in Vietnam which will make clear the continuing relevance of the ancient text.
